Shingles Are One Part of the System

Architectural shingles are the standard choice for most homes in the area. They are laminated in two layers, which makes them heavier and thicker than the old flat 3-tab style, gives them a dimensional look and generally improves wind resistance. But the shingle is one component in a system, and the system is what keeps water out. That system includes the starter course at the eaves and rakes, synthetic underlayment over the full deck, leak barrier in valleys and around penetrations, drip edge, step flashing at walls, ridge cap, attic ventilation and the gutters that carry the water away. When one of those is wrong, the others pay for it. Shingles nailed outside the nailing zone blow off. A missing starter course lets the first row lift. Reused flashing leaks. Poor ventilation cooks the shingles from underneath. Undersized gutters overflow and back water up at the roof edge. We plan all of it together and install it in sequence, following the manufacturer's instructions for fastener placement and count. The job runs on the same project plan as every replacement: property covered, debris cleared each workday, magnetic sweep and walkthrough at the end.
